Quick Verdict

Google documents performance reporting, indexing diagnostics, URL inspection, sitemap tools, enhancements, API access, and BigQuery export. The service is free, while G2 reports a 4.7 out of 5 rating from 497 reviews.

Overview

Google Search Console is a free web service from Google. It helps site owners, developers, and SEO professionals monitor how properties appear in Google Search.

The service reports impressions, clicks, click-through rate, queries, pages, countries, devices, and search result types. It also identifies crawling, indexing, structured data, and page experience issues.

Search Console is focused on Google-owned search data. It does not provide equivalent performance reporting for competing search engines.

Key Features

The Performance reports show organic search activity across Google Search, Discover, and News when sufficient data is available. Users can filter results by date, page, query, country, device, and search appearance.

The Page indexing report identifies pages Google can find and index. URL Inspection provides indexing status, crawl information, canonical details, live testing, and rendered-page views for individual URLs.

Search Console includes Sitemaps, Removals, Core Web Vitals, HTTPS, structured data, rich results, mobile usability, security, manual actions, and links reporting.

The Search Console API supports Search Analytics queries, sitemap management, property management, and URL Inspection. Search Console can also export performance data to BigQuery for scheduled analysis.

Pricing

Google Search Console is free to use. Google does not publish paid Search Console subscription tiers or a time-limited trial because the core service is available without a subscription.

The Search Console API is also free, subject to usage quotas. BigQuery exports can create separate Google Cloud storage and query charges after applicable free usage limits.

Pros & Cons

Pros: It provides first-party Google Search data, includes detailed indexing diagnostics, supports sitemap and URL testing workflows, offers an API, and has no subscription fee.

Cons: Reporting is limited to Google properties, data may not be real time, API responses have quotas and row limits, and advanced BigQuery analysis can introduce cloud infrastructure costs.

Alternatives

Bing Webmaster Tools is the closest search-engine-specific alternative for Microsoft Bing visibility and indexing data.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools focuses on site auditing and backlink analysis for verified websites. Semrush and Moz Pro add broader competitive research, rank tracking, and SEO workflow features, generally through paid plans.

Matomo is an alternative for broader website analytics, but it does not replace Search Console’s first-party Google Search indexing and query reports.

FAQ

Is Google Search Console free? Yes. Google describes Search Console as a free service. Related Google Cloud services used for BigQuery exports may have separate usage charges.

Does Search Console have an API? Yes. The API provides Search Analytics, Sitemaps, Sites, and URL Inspection services.

Can Search Console connect with Google Analytics? Yes. A Search Console property can be linked with a Google Analytics web data stream to view organic search reports within Analytics.

Does Search Console show every search query? No. Google applies privacy protections and reporting limits. Bulk exports exclude anonymized queries.

Is Google Search Console available as a desktop or mobile app? Google documents Search Console as a web service. This profile therefore lists Web and API platforms rather than native desktop or mobile applications.
