Tailwind CSS is an open-source CSS framework for creating custom web interfaces with utility classes. It scans HTML, JavaScript components, and other templates, then generates a static CSS file containing the styles used by a project.
Version 4 introduced a high-performance engine, CSS-first configuration, automatic content detection, native CSS theme variables, container queries, and dedicated Vite and CLI packages. The framework uses modern CSS features and targets current browser versions.
Tailwind CSS provides utility classes for layout, spacing, typography, colors, borders, effects, transforms, transitions, and responsive behavior. Variant prefixes support responsive breakpoints, hover states, focus states, dark mode, and other conditional styles.
Version 4 supports CSS-first customization through theme variables and custom utilities. It also includes automatic content detection, built-in CSS imports, container queries, arbitrary values, a standalone CLI, a Vite plugin, and a PostCSS plugin.
Official editor tooling includes Tailwind CSS IntelliSense for Visual Studio Code, class completion, syntax highlighting, linting, and hover previews. An official Prettier plugin sorts Tailwind classes according to the project’s recommended order.
The Tailwind CSS framework is free to use under the MIT License. It does not require a subscription or time-limited trial.
Tailwind Plus is a separate commercial offering containing components, templates, and a React UI kit. Its official pricing page lists a $299 one-time Personal license and a $979 one-time Teams license, with local taxes applied separately.
